About Rock Rapids
Rock Rapids takes its name from the falls on the Rock River, and a post office has carried that name since 1871; two years later the young town was picked as the Lyon County seat because it sat near the middle of the county. The railroad arrived in 1886, when the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern finished its line through town, and its Stick-style depot by the river now houses the Lyon County Historical Society's museum. Builders here leaned on the stone of the region: the Methodist church of 1896 is laid in blue-gray and red granite, and the little Melan Bridge of 1893, faced with jasper and among the first reinforced concrete arches in the country, was saved by local sentiment and moved to Emma Sater Park in 1964. Families love Island Park, set on two islands in the Rock River, with fishing, camping cabins, the city pool and a trail that crosses the old railroad trestle. Today about 2,600 people live here, home of the Central Lyon Lions, a 1917 Beaux-Arts courthouse with a stone lion over the door, more than twenty history murals from the Mural Society, and Heritage Days every summer since 1981.
