About Adrian
Adrian began in 1876, when the St. Paul and Dakota Railroad laid out a 16-block town site on the prairie of western Nobles County, and it was named for Adrian Iselin, a big stockholder in the railroad. Bishop John Ireland of St. Paul bought tens of thousands of acres nearby and drew Catholic families from eastern cities to farm them, and by 1877 the little station was shipping 100,000 bushels of grain. When the first big brick church burned on Christmas Eve 1899, the young town built the Church of St. Adrian, finished in 1901, and the 1891 Slade Hotel still stands downtown as senior apartments. Today families use the Adrian Branch Library on Maine Avenue and cheer on the Dragons at the Adrian schools.
