About Sibley
Sibley got its start in 1872, when the Sioux City and St. Paul Railroad laid track across a stretch of treeless prairie many had written off as unfarmable, and settlers soon found how rich the soil was. As the first town in Osceola County it became the county seat, and it took its name from Henry Hastings Sibley, Minnesota's first governor, whose title also gives the Sibley-Ocheyedan Generals their name. In 1903 the county finished the stone courthouse that still anchors 3rd Avenue and 8th Street, with a rotunda ringed by columns and brass railings inside. A Carnegie grant built the public library on 9th Street, dedicated in December 1917 and enlarged in 1985 with a meeting room, a genealogy room and a big space for children. Today about 2,860 people live here, among family farms, with Hawkeye Point, the highest spot in Iowa, a short drive north of town.
