About Walker's Point

Walker's Point began in 1834, when George Walker staked a claim on a low ridge south of where the Milwaukee and Menomonee rivers meet and built a cabin and trading post there. It grew more slowly than the settlements across the rivers, but by 1846, when the three joined into the City of Milwaukee, 1,366 people lived here, most of them German immigrants, with Scandinavians, Irish and later Polish families too. Breweries and leather tanneries rose along the Menomonee, and by 1872 Milwaukee was the biggest leather-tanning city in the world. Its streets still mix workers' cottages, large brick homes, corner stores, old factories and churches like Holy Trinity from 1849, and in 1978 its heart became a historic district.
