About Avenues West

Avenues West lies just west of downtown Milwaukee, from Interstate 43 to 27th Street and from Interstate 94 north to Highland Avenue. Its anchor is Marquette University, which began as Marquette College in 1881 at 10th and State Streets and now fills the blocks along Wisconsin Avenue. Brewer Frederick Pabst built his brick mansion here in 1892, and Gesu Church, finished in 1894, rises beside the campus. Today people tour the Pabst Mansion, visit the 15th-century St. Joan of Arc Chapel that was moved from France to the campus, and walk the 27th Street business strip that its owners call SoHi.
