About Third Ward

The Historic Third Ward is one of Milwaukee's oldest neighborhoods, a flat stretch of once-swampy land between the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan, just south of downtown. Irish immigrants settled it first, while ships tied up along the river to load goods into brick factories and warehouses. After a great fire in 1892 leading architects designed new buildings for the ward over the next 36 years, and Italian families opened grocery houses along Commission Row on Broadway. Today the old warehouses hold lofts, shops, art galleries, theaters and the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, the Milwaukee Public Market opened in 2005, and the Riverwalk joins the ward to downtown.
