About Waukon
Waukon got its start in the fall of 1849, when George Shattuck put up a hay shanty to keep his family sheltered until a log cabin could be built, and the town and its post office followed in 1853. Its name honors the Ho-Chunk leader Waukon Decorah (or, some say, his son John Waukon), whose people lived on these prairies in the 1840s. For years Waukon and Lansing fought over the county seat, with votes, offers to pay for a courthouse, and even a sheriff's posse hauling off county records, until the Iowa Supreme Court settled it for Waukon in 1867. The 1861 courthouse still stands as the Old Courthouse Museum, where visitors can sit in the original second-floor courtroom, and across the street the 1940 Allamakee County Court House was the last courthouse in Iowa built with PWA money. A narrow-gauge railroad once climbed 600 feet up from the Mississippi, and an iron mine on nearby Iron Hill ran until World War I. Today Waukon is the Allamakee County seat, a town of about 3,800 at the edge of the Driftless bluffs, with a city park, aquatic center, campground and a haunted park walk the FBLA puts on every October.
