About Windom
Windom was laid out in 1871 by a railroad engineer, who gave it a center square with the shops around it, and it was the only town on that rail line to follow the plan. It was named for William Windom, a senator who later ran the nation's treasury. Windom became the county seat of Cottonwood County, and its domed red sandstone courthouse has stood since 1905. Today neighbors gather around the downtown square and the library in an old bank building, and they walk the parks by the Des Moines River and Cottonwood Lake.
