About Bronzeville

Bronzeville is the name Black Milwaukeeans gave their home neighborhood north of downtown, a name used in several cities for the many shades of brown in its people. From about 1900 to 1950 its heart was Walnut Street, in the blocks between Third and Twelfth streets from State Street up to North Avenue. Carver Park, at its center, has been a park off and on since 1853, once as a beer garden and later as Lapham Park. Today the corner of North Avenue and King Drive is being rebuilt as Bronzeville, with new shops, and America's Black Holocaust Museum reopened here in 2022 in the new Griot building. Neighbors come for the museum's community days and book club, the park, and the shops along North Avenue.
