About Bellevue
Bellevue sits in a river valley between a north and a south bluff on the Mississippi, and its name says why people stayed: John D. Bell laid the town out in 1835, built a cabin, became the first postmaster, and settlers took the 'beautiful view' as the town's name. Long before them, Woodland peoples and later the Sauk and Meskwaki lived in these valleys and left burial mounds high on the south bluff. In 1843 Elbridge G. Potter started a flour mill on Mill Creek whose Jasper brand flour earned a national name, and in 1845 the town raised a Greek Revival courthouse that went on to serve as a school and is still Bellevue Elementary today. Steamboats once tied up below the riverfront park; since 1939 Lock and Dam No. 12 has carried barges and paddlewheel cruise boats past downtown, and freight trains still roll right down the middle of Second Street. Families climb to the state park overlook for the view the town was named for, and look up at Mont Rest, the 1893 house on the north bluff that locals have always called 'The Castle.' About 2,400 people live here now.
