About Shullsburg
Shullsburg began in the 1820s as a lead-mining camp started by Jesse Shull and Henry Gratiot, which makes it one of the oldest settlements in Wisconsin. The miners here are said to be the first people called Badgers, and an 1838 map of the town already marks a Badger Hill. After the railroad came in the 1880s, merchants built the brick and limestone shops along Water Street, and 34 of those buildings are now on the National Register of Historic Places. The last lead mine in the region closed here in 1979, and since then neighbors have restored downtown, built the Townsend Center with its library, and kept Badger Park busy with ball games and the Fourth of July. The city is now getting ready to turn 200 in 2027.
