About Blue Earth
Blue Earth was platted in 1856 and takes its name from the Blue Earth River that curls around the town. The Dakota name for the river means blue earth, after blue-green clay in its banks. Farming and food plants shaped the town, and a tall statue of the Jolly Green Giant now greets people near the I-90 and US 169 crossing. The 1892 Faribault County Courthouse, with its tall corner tower, and several old churches give downtown its look. Today neighbors use the library, the Giant Park and Giant Days, the county fairgrounds and the Steinberg Nature Park.
