About Mankato
Mankato began in 1852, when Parsons King Johnson settled where the Minnesota and Blue Earth rivers meet. It became a city on the day Minnesota became a state, and its name comes from the Dakota name for the river. Today the town is known for Minnesota State University, Mankato on its bluff, and for the claim of the first written hotdish recipe. Each September the Mahkato Wacipi, a Dakota gathering, fills Land of Memories Park.
