About Clarke Square
Clarke Square sits just south of the Menomonee Valley, between Sixteenth Street and Layton Boulevard, and it is one of Milwaukee's oldest neighborhoods. It is named for Norman and Lydia Clarke, who bought 160 acres here in 1837 and later gave the land that became Clarke Square Park in 1890. Families from Europe settled first, and today the neighborhood has a strong Latino identity along with Southeast Asian families, with Sixteenth Street lined by Latino restaurants, markets and shops. Mitchell Park and its three glass Domes, opened in the 1960s, are a favorite place to see plants from around the world, and a youth football field run by Journey House sits right beside them.
