About West Milwaukee
West Milwaukee began as farms, gravel pits and taverns just west of the big city, until railroads, streetcars and factories like Pawling and Harnischfeger arrived in the early 1900s. In 1906 its 909 residents voted to become their own village, and for decades it was a working town of rail yards and smokestacks, with homes built close to the plants. Many of those factories are gone now, and shops and small businesses line Miller Park Way. Families today head to West Milwaukee Park in the middle of the village for its ball diamonds, tot lot and wading pool, walk to Brewers games at American Family Field nearby, and fill the sidewalks for trick-or-treat each Halloween.
