About Colfax

Colfax was founded in 1864 near the Red Cedar River and 18 Mile Creek, and it took its name from Schuyler Colfax, who was vice president under Ulysses S. Grant. The settlement grew on timber, sandstone and farming, and its Norwegian roots are still part of village life. Local Colfax sandstone built two of its best-known buildings: the 1914 Soo Line depot, now the Colfax Railroad Museum with its old cabooses and coaches, and the 1915 Municipal Building, which still holds the public library. Today the village calls itself the Friendliest Little Town in Wisconsin, and each June it hosts the Colfax Free Fair.
