About Chippewa Falls
Chippewa Falls grew up around a sawmill at the falls of the Chippewa River, after logging opened here in the late 1830s, and it became the county seat in 1854 and a city in 1869. In the 1880s its mill was said to be the largest sawmill under one roof in the world, and the town is also home to Leinenkugel's, a brewery founded here in 1867, and the 1893 Spring House over the Chippewa Spring. Later, in 1972, Seymour Cray started Cray Research here and built the Cray-1 supercomputer. Today families picnic and visit the zoo at Irvine Park, shop Bridge Street's old brick downtown, catch a show at the Heyde Center for the Arts, and come out each summer for the Northern Wisconsin State Fair and the Pure Water Days parade.
