About Eau Claire
Eau Claire grew up where the Eau Claire River runs into the Chippewa, and its French name means clear water; the local story says early French travelers on the muddy Chippewa cheered when they reached the clearer stream. The McCann family became the first lasting settlers in 1845, sawmills soon lined the rivers, and the lumber town became a city in 1872. When logging faded, the university that opened in 1916 helped turn it toward schools, factories and health care. Today families hear free summer concerts at the Owen Park bandshell, watch baseball at Carson Park on Half Moon Lake, and walk downtown past the sculptures and the weekly farmers market in Phoenix Park.
