About Cresco
Cresco took its name from a Latin word meaning "I grow," and it lived up to it: Augustus Beadle had the land platted in 1866, coaxed the railroad to run through, and within months about a thousand people had settled in. The new rail hub pulled whole neighboring villages, buildings and all, into town, and Cresco became the seat of Howard County, with a brick Italianate courthouse finished in 1880. Families still gather downtown at the Cresco Opera House, a 425-seat theater that opened in 1915, and at Beadle Park, where a restored Milwaukee Road diesel engine stands as a reminder of the trains that built the place. The old rail bed is now part of the paved Prairie Farmer Recreational Trail toward Ridgeway and Calmar, so kids can bike the same route the first settlers rode in on. Today Cresco is a town of nearly 3,900 that proudly claims Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Borlaug, who graduated from Cresco High School, and Ellen Church, the world's first flight attendant.
