About Gaylord
Gaylord began in October 1881, when William Washburn's Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway reached the spot and a town was laid out at the stop. It was named for E. W. Gaylord, a railroad man who never lived there, and became a village in 1883 and a city in 1947. The town grew as a farm trade center on the shore of Lake Titlow, and after a long campaign it won the Sibley County seat in 1915. The 1916 courthouse still anchors the town, and Gaylord City Park, with its dance pavilion, bandshell and WPA-built bridge, has hosted concerts, festivals and picnics since 1897. Today neighbors gather for the firefighters' pancake breakfast in spring, the chamber's EGGstravaganza in August, and summers at the aquatic center.
