About New Ulm

New Ulm was started in 1854 by a German land company and named for the city of Ulm in Germany. Turner societies, groups that mixed gymnastics with lectures and debate, helped build the town from 1856, and its first plan set aside land for a Turner Hall, a courthouse and a school. Today it sits where the Minnesota and Cottonwood rivers meet, and it is known for its German roots. People come for Oktoberfest, the August Schell brewery, the Glockenspiel and the Hermann Monument.
