About Historic Mitchell Street
Historic Mitchell Street is the busy shopping street at the heart of Milwaukee's near south side, about a mile and a half southwest of downtown, and it is named for the banker Alexander Mitchell. Polish families founded St. Stanislaus parish here in 1866, and its brick church with two front towers still stands at Fifth and Mitchell. Banks, shops and big department stores filled the blocks from the 1910s to the 1930s, and in 2018 the West Mitchell Street Commercial District joined the National Register. The neighborhood has changed from Polish to Latino, and the old Hill's department store building now holds the Mitchell Street library, the largest branch in the city, with bilingual programs for families.
