About Holmen

Norwegian settlers came to Holmen in 1862, and the place was first called Frederickstown after its blacksmith, Frederick Anderson. When a post office opened in 1875 it took the name Holmen, a Norwegian word for a small island. The village sits at the foot of the bluffs in northern La Crosse County and has grown fast, from about 2,500 people in 1980 to more than 10,000 today. Each August the Lions Club's free Kornfest fills the American Legion grounds with sweet buttered corn, a parade, a car show and a carnival, and on summer Sunday evenings families bring lawn chairs to concerts at the Halfway Creek Park band shell.
