About La Crosse

La Crosse sits where the Black, La Crosse and Mississippi rivers meet, on a wide flat stretch below tall bluffs. Its name comes from a stick game Native people played here, which the French called la crosse, and in 1841 Nathan Myrick set up a trading post that grew into a village, then a city in 1856. Lumber rafted down the Black River and big breweries made it one of Wisconsin's largest cities. Today families picnic in Riverside Park by the Blue Bridges, drive up Grandad Bluff for the view, and turn out each fall for Oktoberfest USA.
