About Jackson Park
Jackson Park is a south side neighborhood about six miles from downtown, between Lincoln and Morgan avenues and 35th and 50th streets. Most of its homes are two-story wood-frame houses built in the early 1900s, long home to working families. The neighborhood shares its name with Jackson Park, land the city bought in 1907 as Reynolds Grove and renamed for President Andrew Jackson in 1910. In the 1930s, crews dug a lagoon linked to the Kinnickinnic River, an outdoor pool opened in 1932, and a pavilion for boating and skating followed in 1950. Beside the lagoon stands Spirit of Commerce, an 1881 zinc statue that once topped a downtown building and is the oldest public sculpture in Milwaukee.
