About West Allis
West Allis grew up around a factory: in 1902 the Allis company, soon Allis-Chalmers, built a big new plant on farmland then called North Greenfield, and the new village took the company's name. It became a city in 1906 and for a time was Milwaukee's largest suburb, growing fivefold between 1910 and 1930. The Wisconsin State Fair has had its permanent home here since 1892, along with the Milwaukee Mile racetrack, opened in 1903. Today families come for the farmers market three days a week in season, the Holiday Folk Fair in November, and the glowing Christmas displays of Candy Cane Lane.
