About Greenfield

Greenfield began in 1839 as part of the Town of Kinnikinnick, and in 1841 it took the name Greenfield, which the postmaster Olney Harrington had suggested. Farm families settled here early; a log cabin from 1836 still stands, kept by the Greenfield Historical Society along with a house built of Milwaukee's pale cream city brick. Neighbors kept carving off pieces of the old town, and when Greenfield became a city in 1957 it was the last place in Milwaukee County to do so, at about a third of its first size. Today families gather at Konkel Park, with its outdoor stage called The Amp and its market hall, visit the marsh at the Wimmer Wetlands, and borrow books at the library on Layton Avenue.
