About Lancaster
Lancaster was planned from the start as the home of Grant County's government: in 1837 Major Glendower Price laid out its streets on a compass grid around a big central square, and a relative from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, gave it its name. The courthouse on that square, finished in 1902, wears an eight-sided dome of glass and copper, which is why Lancaster calls itself the City of the Dome. The first governor of Wisconsin, Nelson Dewey, made his home here. Today families take in a movie at the Grantland Theatre that shares the 1923 city hall building, spread out lawn chairs for the community band's summer concerts at the library plaza, and head to the fairgrounds for the Grant County Fair.
