About Boscobel
Boscobel sits in the Driftless hills of northern Grant County, just south of the lower Wisconsin River. A railroad engineer and two partners bought the land in 1854, named it Boscobel, often said to mean 'beautiful grove,' and sold the first lots in 1856 as the railroad arrived. The town became a city in 1873 so it could build a bridge across the Wisconsin River, and it grew as a market for the farms around it. Its limestone Central House hotel is where two traveling salesmen dreamed up the Gideons in 1898, and the old depot, the Rock School and a Civil War veterans' hall still stand. Today people launch boats from the landings on the river, swim at the city pool, and stroll Wisconsin Avenue's old downtown.
