About Little Canada
In 1844 a French Canadian settler named Benjamin Gervais moved north from Saint Paul and built a grist mill by the lake that now carries his name. Other French Canadian families followed, and by 1851 about forty of them lived there. The area was called New Canada in 1858, became the village of Little Canada in 1953 and a city in 1974. The city still shows its roots with a fleur-de-lis and maple leaf symbol, and each August it holds Canadian Days with its sister city, Thunder Bay, Ontario.
