About Marshall
Marshall was laid out in 1872 when the railroad reached the spot, and it grew fast: the first house went up in 1873 and it was a city by 1901. The Redwood River runs through downtown, and the town became a regional center for milling, farming and, later, the Schwan Food Company, which grew from an ice-cream delivery business in the 1950s. Southwest Minnesota State University opened in 1967. Today people gather for the St. Patrick's Day parade, Crazy Days downtown in July and Saturday farmers markets.
