About Willmar
Willmar grew up after the railroad reached Kandiyohi County in 1869, and it became the county seat in 1871. Many of the first families came from Sweden and Norway, and the city later became a rail hub with lines running out in several directions. Its Memorial Auditorium was built in 1938 as a Depression-era public works project and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Today Willmar sits at the center of a lakes area with more than 100 lakes for fishing, boating and biking.
