About Mountain Lake
Mountain Lake was platted in 1872 beside a shallow lake whose tall, tree-topped island looked like a mountain to early settler William Mason, and he gave the town and lake that name. Between 1873 and 1880 hundreds of Low German-speaking Mennonite families from the Russian Empire, in today's Ukraine, settled on the farms around it, and the town grew up around the railroad. The old lake was drained for farmland in the early 1900s, and in 1937-38 a Works Progress Administration dam made a new Mountain Lake on the north edge of town. Today Heritage Village keeps the pioneer story in 21 buildings, and the town gathers each June for its Pow Wow celebration and each September for the Utschtallung heritage fair.
