About Springfield
Settlers from Scandinavia, Ireland and Germany reached the prairie here in 1869, and the first homes were built of cut sod. When the railroad came, its stop was named Burns after early settler John Burns, and a village was platted in 1877. In 1881 the village took the name Springfield for the big, flowing spring on the town site, and in 1923 it became a city. For more than a century the A.C. Ochs brick and tile plant, started in 1890, made bricks here, and it was the last brick plant in Minnesota when it closed in 2016. Today about 2,000 people live along the Cottonwood River, and the town gathers for Riverside Days each June and its Live Nativity Pageant each December.
