About Madelia
Madelia was founded on September 10, 1857, on the Watonwan River; it was first called Wapaca, then renamed within a year for the late daughter of founder Philander Hartshorn. It served as the first seat of Watonwan County, and from 1872 to 1878 the county's courthouse and offices filled the brick Flanders' Block on Main Street. The town calls itself the Pride of the Prairie, and its Watonwan County Historical Center keeps an 1857 log cabin and a covered wagon. Today families camp, golf and play ball at Watona Park by the river, and each November the town lights up for Razzle Dazzle.
