About Redgranite
Redgranite began as a farm settlement called Sand Prairie, where big boulders of hard reddish rock poked out of the yellow sand around a trading post. In the 1880s people found that the rock was mahogany-red granite, and the quarry boom that followed brought skilled stone cutters from Europe; paving blocks cut here went into streets as far away as Chicago. The quarry closed in the 1920s, when concrete and asphalt took over, and it filled with clear water. It became a village park in 1995, and divers, swimmers and families come to it in summer, while the village's Labor Day festival, with a parade, music and fireworks, is one of the longest-running in Wisconsin.
