About Ripon
Ripon began in 1849, when David Mapes laid out a village on the Silver Creek land of John Scott Horner, who named it after his family's home of Ripon, England. Early settlers called it the Prairie City, because it sat at the north edge of Wisconsin's largest open prairie, and within two years it took in the nearby Ceresco farm community. Ripon College was started here in 1851, and a one-room Little White Schoolhouse from 1853 is now a museum. Today families stroll Watson Street's old brick storefronts, bring kids to library game days and teen escape rooms, and come to free family-friendly history nights at the historical society on Watson Street.
