About Sauk Centre
Sauk Centre was settled in 1856 and became a city in 1889. Its name came from a lottery among the town's first shareholders, and for years the post office spelled it Sauk Center until the city won the right to use Centre in 1936. It is the birthplace of Nobel Prize novelist Sinclair Lewis, whose book Main Street was inspired by the town, and it calls its downtown the Original Main Street. Today neighbors walk the main street, ride the Lake Wobegon Trail, and gather for Sinclair Lewis Days each summer.
