About St. Joseph
St. Joseph was laid out in 1855 and was named for the patron saint of the log chapel that early German and Slovenian settlers built. The stone Church of St. Joseph, finished in 1871, was the first church in Minnesota made of lasting materials to be consecrated. Benedictine sisters moved here in 1863, and their school grew into the College of Saint Benedict. Today the church spire and the college chapel dome rise over a small main street of shops, and every summer the parish hosts a big free concert.
