About Washington Heights

Washington Heights sits on Milwaukee's western edge, between 47th and 60th Streets and Vliet Street and North Avenue. In 1838 the land was set aside for a canal that never got built, and in 1839 George Dousman bought most of it for a big farm, where his family also bottled water from a mineral spring; Neeskara Elementary School now stands where the spring flowed. Homes came after the streetcar line to Wauwatosa was extended and Frederick Law Olmsted's Washington Park opened next door in the 1890s. Today it is known for its 1920s Arts and Crafts houses, large churches like St. Sebastian and Mount Olive on Washington Boulevard, and shops and galleries along Vliet Street, including a building with a giant coffee cup on its roof.
