About Sherman Park

Sherman Park takes its name from the park at Sherman Boulevard and Burleigh Street, land the city bought in 1891 and first called Perrigo Park. Houses filled the farm fields from the 1900s to the 1930s, and Sherman Boulevard got a planted center strip in 1910, lined with bungalows, Tudor and Prairie-style duplexes and big Craftsman homes. For many years it was a center of Milwaukee's Jewish community, and in 1971 neighbors formed the Sherman Park Community Association to bring people of every race and faith together. Today Black, Jewish and white families share its churches, synagogues and tree-lined blocks. Neighbors meet at the Sherman Phoenix market hall, summer concerts in Gengler Park and Harvest Fest in the park each fall.
