About Waterville

Waterville was laid out in 1856 by nine settlers from New England, and one of them, E. I. Wright, named it after his hometown of Waterville, Maine; the name also fits a town set between Lake Tetonka and Lake Sakatah. The railroad reached town from Faribault in 1882, and the Union Hotel, built in 1888, served travelers and summer visitors coming to the lakes. Today the old rail line is the Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail, which runs right through town and on into Sakatah Lake State Park on the Cannon River. Every June people gather for Bullhead Days, with food, a parade, a carnival and fireworks.
