About Madison Lake
Madison Lake sits on the northwest shore of the lake of the same name, which was named for President James Madison. The land was deeded for a town in 1881, a railroad reached it in 1884, and the village was incorporated in 1892. In its early years the lake drew summer visitors to resorts, a hotel and floating pavilions, and President Taft stopped here by train in 1911. Today the old rail line is the Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail, with a trail access on Main Street, and the lake is one of southern Minnesota's popular walleye lakes. Neighbors have kept a record of the spring ice-out on the lake since 1927.
