About Morristown

Morristown grew up on the south bank of the Cannon River, where the water power drew the Morris family to build a saw mill in the 1850s. The town was platted in 1855 and named for Walter Morris, and in the 1860s Christian Hershey Jr. built a grist mill on the same spot. Local volunteers saved that old mill, which joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2019 and now stands beside a one-room schoolhouse museum. Today people fish from the bridges by the dam, ride the Sakatah State Trail through town, and turn out for Dam Days, a three-day celebration that opens with a Friday evening parade.
