About Waseca

Waseca was platted in 1867 where the Winona and St. Peter Railroad made a stop, and within a year it was a busy shipping point for wheat. Its name is a Dakota word that means rich in provisions. The town grew on farming and made things for the world, from radio parts at E.F. Johnson to catalogs and printing. The University of Minnesota ran a farm school and then a two-year college here until 1992. Now people walk and bike the path around Clear Lake and come out for the Sleigh and Cutter Festival, Lakefest and the county fair.
