About Augusta
Augusta began in 1856 along Bridge Creek, where early settlers built a sawmill and a dam, and Charles Buckman, who came from Maine, gave the town the name of his home state's capital. The village was laid out in 1857 and became a city in 1885, and its farms turned from grain to dairy around 1900. A few miles north, the wooden Dells Mill from the 1860s still sits on its millpond and is now a working-mill museum. Every July the town throws Bean and Bacon Days, with a big grand parade, fireworks, a demolition derby and a baked bean wrestling contest.
