About Strum
Strum grew up along the Buffalo River, also called the Beef River, and was first named Tilden before it took the name Strum on January 1, 1890, after Louis Strum of Eau Claire, a friend of Congressman William T. Price. A railroad once ran straight through town, lined with feed mills, and two Lutheran church steeples stood on either side of the river. Around 1950 Strum and nearby Eleva joined their high schools into one central school between the two villages. Today a dam on the river holds Crystal Lake, where families camp, fish and walk the lakeside paths, and the Buffalo River State Trail carries bikes, horses and snowmobiles right through the village.
