About Bay Creek
Bay Creek is a near south side neighborhood tucked between Monona Bay and Wingra Creek, and its name was picked because water makes up almost all of its edges. The first house lots were laid out in 1889 as 'South Madison,' and early neighbors walked to work across the railroad bridges over Monona Bay; by 1902 about 400 people lived here, with a shared church, a small schoolhouse and a streetcar coming down Lakeside Street. The city annexed South Madison in 1923 and built the main part of Franklin School, paved streets and added shops near the old depot. In Olin Park, the barn-like Normal Hall from 1884 is left from the Monona Lake Assembly, a summer camp that once drew thousands to the lakeshore, and the city bought the grounds for a park in 1912. Today families swim at Goodman Pool, Madison's first city pool, and at Bernie's Beach on Monona Bay, and walk or bike the Wingra Creek path between Olin Park and the UW Arboretum.
