About Tenney-Lapham

Tenney-Lapham fills the Lake Mendota side of Madison's isthmus, between downtown and the Yahara River. The lakeside ridge here was part of the 1836 town plat, but most homes came after a streetcar line ran out East Johnson Street in the 1890s, and builders filled the marsh along Sherman Avenue for houses in the same years. In 1899 a park group bought marshland with money from attorney Daniel K. Tenney, and Tenney Park grew into a lagoon and island with footbridges, a beach and the Yahara River locks. Breese Stevens Field, whose brick grandstand opened in 1926, is the oldest masonry grandstand in Wisconsin. Today neighbors skate on the frozen lagoon in winter, swim and fish in summer, and gather for a fall festival in Tenney Park and a friendly kickball game against Marquette.
