About Regent
The Regent neighborhood rises on hills just west of the University of Wisconsin campus and Camp Randall. It began in 1893, when Breese Stevens sold 106 acres of hilltop pasture to the University Heights Company, which laid out Madison's first curving streets to follow the hill; professors and business people built homes there, and Madison annexed it in 1903. To the south, the Wingra Park Addition filled in after the streetcar reached Forest Hill Cemetery, and the area west of Allen Street grew up around the time West High opened about 1930. Today its steep, tree-lined streets hold Queen Anne, Prairie and period revival houses, including a Frank Lloyd Wright 'Airplane House', and neighbors gather for a Fourth of July celebration and neighborhood garage sales.
